About me
Jim Kerr ’86 is the chairman, president, and CEO of Southern Company Gas, a leading natural gas provider and subsidiary of Southern Company. He oversees the delivery of clean, safe, and reliable natural gas to 4.4 million utility customers across four states, along with retail and nonutility energy services.
Since joining Southern Company in 2014, Jim has played a key role in major transactions, including the merger with AGL Resources. Previously, he was a partner at McGuireWoods LLP and served eight years on the North Carolina Utilities Commission, where he was also president of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners.
A respected leader in the energy sector, Kerr has testified before Congress and regulatory agencies on industry policies. He serves on the boards of the Georgia Aquarium, Skyland Trail, the American Gas Association, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
Jim earned his bachelor's degree from W&L and his law degree from the University of North Carolina. He and his wife, Frances, have two children.
